Melinos Averkiou
Associate (Research) Professor @ CYENS Centre of Excellence • Adjunct Research Scientist @ University of Cyprus
Welcome to my personal website.
I am an Associate (Research) Professor and Group Leader of the Visual Computing Group (VCG) at the CYENS Centre of Excellence in Cyprus, where I supervise a team of PhD students working in artificial intelligence (AI). As an Adjunct Research Scientist at the University of Cyprus, I supervise postgraduate students and teach courses in deep learning and computer vision.
My research focuses on structure-aware AI for understanding real-world environments and generating virtual ones. I develop discriminative models that recover geometry, semantics, and relationships from images and 3D data, and generative models that use this structure to produce more controllable and faithful outputs. The broader goal is to bridge the gap between real and virtual worlds, from objects and garments to buildings and cities, with applications in spatial AI, digital twins, engineering, robotics, and extended reality. See my publications for more information.
I earned an MPhil in Advanced Computer Science from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from University College London, where I worked on machine learning for discovering shape structure. I was a founding member of the Smart Geometry Processing Group, supervised by Prof. Niloy Mitra. After my PhD, I joined the University of Cyprus as a research scientist and worked on deep learning for shape understanding, including semantic segmentation and style recognition.
I grew up in Cyprus, an island in the Eastern Mediterranean. See my CV for more information.
